INSTITUTE OVERVIEW
This two day institute is designed to offer knowledge about the brain, brain research and brain-based learning. Experts form the fields of education, neuroscience, and cognitive science will discuss how research from the field of neuroscience can be utilized in practical ways to enhance learning. Presenters will provide information on natural learning systems; brain development in early childhood; strategies to enhance memory and recall; options for working with struggling learners; the effect of stress on the brain and learning performance; developing classrooms that encourage empathy and a sense of belonging; and strategies for working with individuals on the autism spectrum. Peer collaboration and networking are an integral part of this institute.


TOPICS TO BE COVERED
Topics during the two-day event will include neuroanatomy, cognitive development, memory and recall, multisensory processing, attention, ADHD, natural learning systems, emotions and learning, executive functioning, Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

NEW! NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
    Thursday, July 16, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
    Visit with colleagues from around the country for hors d'oeuvres and drinks. View an exhibit from Architecture and Design Studio, an Albuquerque Academy summer program for elementary students that incorporates brain-based instructional strategies. Young designers from this course will be available to discuss their work.

    Friday, July 17, 7:15-8 a.m.
    Learning Specialists and individuals who provide learning support are invited to a breakfast on campus before the start of the day's sessions.

NEW! SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
Albuquerque Academy is proud of its many sustainability initiatives. The Brain Institute supports those initiatives in the following ways:
  • Water: Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle. Water will be available to fill bottles along with (recycled) paper cups.
  • Paper use reduction: Handouts for each session will be posted online one month prior to the conference. Copies of handouts will also be provided at the Institute on CD or memory stick.
  • Final evaluation: As an alternative to paper evaluation forms, our evaluation will be sent to you online. We deeply value your feedback and look forward to reading and responding to your comments and requests.
  • Recycling: Numerous containers are placed around our campus for recycling. Red baskets for trash; blue for recyclable materials.
  • Bags: We will provide recycled paper bags to carry any bookstore purchases.

All K-12 educators, administrators, learning specialists, special educators, reading specialists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, speech and language pathologists, staff developers, parents, and anyone interested in learning more about the topics being covered.



REGISTRATION FEES (Two day program includes lunch)

    $400/person: early registration by June 1, 2009
    $425/person: registration after June 1, 2009

  • Group Rates: (from same organization)

    4-7 Attendees
    $325/person: early registration; $350/person after June 1, 2009

    8-11 Attendees
    $275/person: early registration; $300/person after June 1, 2009

    12+ Attendees
    $250/person: early registration; $275/person after June 1, 2009
Cancellations prior to June 1, 2009 receive a refund less 20% handling fee. No refunds will be provided after June 1, 2009.

CEU
The Institute is approved by the New Mexico Psychological Association (an affiliate of the American Psychological Association) and offers eleven hours of continuing education credits to psychologists. Proof of attendance at the two day event is required.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. If your professional organization has specific requirements for this document, please let us know (rhodes@aa.edu).
