Tuition and Financial Assistance

In addition to the admission application, Albuquerque Academy requires a separate application for financial assistance. Instructions for applying for financial assistance may be found here.

You must apply for financial assistance separately from admission.

Tuition for each school year is typically set by the Board of Trustees in the late fall for the following school year. For the 2016-17 school year tuition is $22,870 which includes lunch.

Albuquerque Academy establishes the amount of financial assistance available for incoming sixth grade students and new students in other grades on an annual basis. This amount is determined by the funds available within the parameters of the operating budget. New families are awarded financial assistance based on the strength of the child’s application as determined by the Admission Committee, the family’s level of demonstrated need, and other attributes that balance an incoming class. Lunch fees, required textbooks, and certain other required materials, which typically range from  $250 to $500 depending on grade level, are covered for all students receiving financial assistance. Because the Academy’s budget is limited, some families who have qualified for assistance unfortunately will not receive it.

The Academy Commitment to Affordability and Access

Aiming to promote and maintain socioeconomic diversity among our student population, Albuquerque Academy demonstrates a strong commitment to need-based financial assistance by providing a sizable share of the school’s budget to fund the financial needs of its students. Tuition only partially covers the total cost of an Academy education. Endowment spending of close to $5,400 annually per student subsidizes tuition to support excellence and breadth throughout the Academy program and facilities. Beyond this subsidy given to all students, the Academy provides approximately twenty-five percent of its students with additional need-based financial assistance.

Albuquerque Academy is fortunate to have one of the largest financial assistance budgets among all independent schools in the United States, awarding over $4.1 million in need-based assistance each year. However, families bear the primary responsibility for financing their children’s education to the extent that they are able. The Academy’s financial assistance program exists to help ensure admitted students with demonstrated need will have the opportunity to attend; however, the budget is limited. As these funds are expended each year, some families who have qualified for assistance unfortunately will not receive it.

Albuquerque Academy establishes the amount of financial assistance available for incoming sixth grade students and new students in other grades on an annual basis. This amount is determined by the funds available within the parameters of the operating budget. New families are awarded financial assistance based on the strength of the child's application as determined by the Admission Committee, the family's level of demonstrated need, and other attributes that balance an incoming class. In cases where the newly admitted student is a sibling of a returning student, assistance will be awarded based on the new student's ranking among admitted students and the family's level of demonstrated need.

For returning students in grades 7-12, financial assistance is awarded as follows: first to returning families currently receiving financial assistance; then to returning families who have experienced a significant change in economic circumstances which now qualifies the family for financial assistance. However, although Albuquerque Academy accepts applications from returning families who have not received financial assistance in the past, typically do not have funds within the operating budget to meet the financial need of these families.

It is our expectation that a student admitted to Albuquerque Academy paying full tuition will continue to do so until the student graduates or leaves the school. Any family who applies for financial assistance and then enrolls without receiving it will not be considered for assistance in future years unless 1) there is a significant change in the family's financial circumstances, 2) funding is available.
