Band

Eight Different Bands

The Academy band program plays an important role in the school community and beyond. The curricular concert band-style groups (Cadet BandCharger Band8-9 Concert Band, and Symphonic Band) as well as the curricular Jazz Band perform in several concerts and festivals throughout the year. The extracurricular groups (Pep BandMiddle School Jazz BandSteel Drum Band) can be seen at several on- and off-campus events making music together, providing entertainment, and having fun. The Pep Band starts the year with a performance at Convocation on the first day of school; the combined Concert and Symphonic Bands end the year at Commencement in May. Various performances at the Homecoming Pep Rally, Open House, and special events (e.g., the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade) provide an important connection between music at Albuquerque Academy and the community.

Extracurricular Groups

List of 3 items.

  • Middle School Jazz Band

Offers students in grades 6-9 the opportunity to participate in jazz band regardless of their elective or performing arts choice. The band meets three times a week, before school, and performs at the High Desert Jazz Festival in November, the Albuquerque Jazz Festival in February, and on Jazz Heritage Night in April. Instrumentation is more flexible than in the curricular 9-12 group, and the group often has non-jazz instruments in its ranks (i.e., flute, clarinet, or violin). Middle School Jazz Band also features a rhythm section of piano, bass, guitar, and drumset.
  • Pep Band and Drumline

Plays an important role in the life of the Academy, providing music on the very first all-school meeting in August, cheering on the Varsity football team during home games, performing its own version of a marching band half-time show at the Homecoming game, and showcasing the band program by performing during the Admission Open House in October. Pep Band is made up of the combined forces of 8-9 Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band, as well as any other student in grades 8-12 interested in continuing on their instruments but not enrolled in a curricular band course.

An important facet of the Pep Band is the Drumline, made up of all the percussionists from the combined bands plus instrumentalists who play on instruments not designed to be played outdoors (i.e., oboe or bassoon). The Drumline has the opportunity to play on a great set of marching percussion, giving ample opportunity for non-percussionists to become a drummer for a season. Traditionally, Drumline starts evening rehearsals on the full week before the first day of school, and the rest of the Pep Band joins for four intense evening rehearsals before the first day of school. As the three bands are scheduled separately, this brief rehearsal time becomes the only full band rehearsals for the entire season. Pep Band is the most visible ensemble in the entire band program.
  • Steel Drum Band

An extracurricular group that gathers either before or after school to use the school's complete set of steel drums to learn and perform steel pan Calypso music. Generally this group starts rehearsals after the football/Pep Band season is over. Performances are organized as needed, although the band has performed twice in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in January.
