A Thriving Guitar Program
Since 1971, classical guitar has been an important part of the Academy instrumental curriculum at all grade levels. Students are taught a love of the instrument through respect for its traditions, mastery of technique, and an impassioned exposure to its richest and most rewarding repertoire. Brought to the concert stage, they convey their love for the classical guitar through mesmerizing and energy-charged performances.
Academy guitar students have received many honors including performances at the 2007 Guitar Foundation of America Convention in Columbus, Georgia and the 2010 LMU Guitar Festival. Ensembles have twice won first prize at the prestigious UTB Guitar Ensemble Competition held in Brownsville, Texas.
The Albuquerque Academy guitar program has been a springboard for serious advanced studies, with graduates having gone on to study at the Paris Conservatory, the Conservatory of the Hague, San Francisco Conservatory, and the Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy as well as many other heralded collegiate music schools. In support of the guitar community in Albuquerque, the Academy sponsors an annual concert which brings the finest young artists to campus for a concert and short residency. The concerts, which are free to all in the community, have featured such brilliant young artists as Ana Vidovic, Antigoni Goni, Lorenzo Micheli, Matteo Mela, and Randall Avers.
