The Application Process
Although the regular 2020-21 admission deadline has passed, Albuquerque Academy welcomes applications for any class for which we still have availability. Please begin by creating an online profile; off-cycle applications will be considered after April 9.
While the information and guidelines below are specific to the regular admission cycle, it serves as a framework for the off-cycle process. Please contact the admission office by email or call 828-3208 for specific details.

Admission Open House
Sunday, October 27, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
We invite your entire family to come to our Open House! Tour our campus; meet faculty, staff, parents, and students; and learn about admission and financial assistance for the 2020-21 school year.
We would love for your child to spend a fun, half-day visit as a buddy on our campus.* Each buddy day visitor will attend engaging morning classes, participate in a group interview activity (this fulfills the interview requirement of an admission file), and eat a nutritious lunch with a student ambassador.
*The buddy day experience is optional; if you would not like for your child to attend a buddy day, please schedule a separate interview in the admission office.
Call the Admission Office at (505) 828-3208 for more information.
School Calendar of Events
Albuquerque Academy hosts many events that the public is invited to attend. Please visit our calendar for more information about upcoming performances, athletic competitions, art exhibitions, and community lectures. Applicant families will also receive email notifications about these special events.
Financial Assistance: Application and Tax Forms
Submit all required documents to School and Student Services by NAIS at this link. by February 21, 2020. Applications for financial will be available online by November 1. Please note that the financial assistance application process is separate from the admission application process.
Contact Emily Kienzle for more information at (505) 828-3352.
The application deadline for Fall 2020 is January 31, 2020.
The application process consists of an online application form, which includes completing an authority to release records form and a test date registration form; uploading a photo of the student; and paying the $65 application fee. If you would like to request a fee waiver, please call the Admission Office at (505) 828-3208.
Recommendation Forms: Follow the instructions in your child’s online application to send the Recommendation Forms to your child’s current English and mathematics instructors. These are accepted in the admission office directly from teachers electronically after October 1 and no later than January 31, 2020.
Once you have sent us your child’s application, you will be asked to schedule a group activity interview. They are conducted by our faculty and admission staff, and are scheduled during the school day. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Group activity interviews last approximately 25 minutes; only students are interviewed. This activity can be part of a student’s Buddy Day visit or can be scheduled separately.
Shortly after the first semester grades have been recorded, we will ask you to send the completed authority to release records form to your child’s current school, giving the school permission to send your child’s grades and any standardized test scores to the Academy.
For parents who homeschool their child, please complete the homeschool supplement form in your child’s online application.
To help prepare your child for the application process, encourage them to read, write, and excel in their classroom behavior. Since motivation is characteristic of Academy students, it is important your child to be engaged in their current classroom activities. Your child is encouraged to work on grade-level, or above grade-level, math skills in order to be well-prepared to take the Academy’s math entrance exam. Click here to view material covered on the math entrance exam.
Admission decision emails will be sent on March 27, 2020.
The admission and financial assistance teams are always happy to answer questions. Call (505) 828-3208 for the Admission Office or (505) 828-3232 for the Tuition Assistance Office.
Tuition Assistance: Application and Tax Forms
Submit all required documents to School and Student Services by NAIS at this link by February 21, 2020. Applications for financial will be available online beginning October 2. Please note that the financial assistance application process is separate from the admission application process.
Contact Emily Kienzle for more information at (505) 828-3352.
There are three test sessions offered for the 2019-20 school year admission season: January 11, January 25, and February 1, 2020. All tests are held on Saturday mornings. There will also be a December 7, 2019 test date for students who are applying for an early decision. A test registration form is included in the online application materials.
Exam Registration and Deadlines: Applicants are registered for an exam by selecting the desired test date on the admission application. Registration must occur by Friday, noon, preceding each exam. If you need to change your child’s test date, please log into their online application to select a different date.
Before testing: The online application, fee, and photo must be submitted and your child’s interview must be scheduled before testing.
Please arrive at the lobby in Simms Center for the Performing Arts between 8 and 8:20 a.m.
Typically, students are finished between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m. We encourage you to remain on campus during testing. However, should you choose to leave campus, please return no later than 10:45 a.m. to pick up your child.
Children taking the test for early-decision applicants, which is offered once annually, will finish around 10:30 a.m. because the parent presentation is shorter and no tours are offered (as these families are already familiar with the school).
During your child’s testing, there will be a parent information session. We strongly encourage attending the parent session for two reasons. First, children feel better and are less worried when they know their parents are on campus with them. Second, we want all families to hear the presentation that includes information about the school, the curriculum, and our admission and financial assistance processes.
Please do not bring a child who is not feeling well to testing. Simply call the admission office the Monday following the missed test date, and we will reschedule your child’s exam.
Each child can only take the admission test once per admission season (once per school year). Applicants who are re-applying in a subsequent year will be given the appropriate test for the grade to which they are applying.
Each applicant will complete a 30-minute writing sample and take a one-hour math exam. In the writing sample, we look for imagination, complexity of thought, ease of expression, and the ability to use punctuation, spelling and grammatical rules at an age-appropriate level. To view descriptions of the material that might be covered on the math test, download the PDF document linked here.
Early-Decision Test Date (Optional):
The December 7 test date is only for students who are applying for an early decision and are in the follow categories:
- Siblings of current Academy students
- Siblings of alumni
- Students who were enrolled in Think Summer or ThinkIt! programs in the previous summer
- Students who have attended the Multicultural Summer Honors Program
- Children of alumni
- Children of faculty and staff
- Out-of-state applicants
No tours will be provided but information on financial assistance will be available. This is a required test date for early-decision students except those who take either the SSAT or the ISEE tests.
To thank families for their engagement with our community, we are waiving the $65 application fee for the following people:
- For children and siblings of Academy alumni, use code alumni65.
- For applicants outside of Greater Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, use code movetoabq65.
- For siblings of current students, use code sibling65.
- For children who are graduates of the Multicultural Summer Honors Program, use code summerhonors.
- For children who attended ThinkSummer this past summer (2019), use code thinksummer65.
All waiver code submissions will be verified. Unfortunately, if you have already paid an application fee, we are not able to extend refunds.
