Community Academy

Albuquerque Academy provides  a variety of learning opportunities to members of the greater Albuquerque area through Community Academy.

For more than a decade, Community Academy has offered a lecture series featuring local and national speakers and performers, literary seminars, and courses through the Wilderness Medicine Institute.

Lecture Series

Join us for thought-provoking seminars, engaging lectures, intriguing writers, and captivating performances.

Events are offered free to the community, on a first-come, first-served basis, and run from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in Simms Center for the Performing Arts, unless otherwise noted. Registration closes once our venue has reached capacity.

Thursday Seminars

Each seminar, led by Hughlings Himwich, is based on a thought-provoking text, ranging from poetry and literary classics to philosophy and neuroscience. Thursday Seminars are offered free to the community and are held in the Simms Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. For registration and assignments, email Hugh Himwich.

Wilderness Medicine

Do you enjoy spending time in the outdoors and want to ensure you are prepared to respond should things go awry?

Albuquerque Academy offers two Wilderness Medicine Institute training courses: Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder Re-Certification. Courses are led by Academy faculty who are certified instructors for NOLS Wilderness Medicine.

The 2019-20 WMI courses will be announced soon.

Red Cross Certification

Albuquerque Academy is proud to be an American Red Cross (ARC) authorized training provider. Through its outreach programs — Think Academy and Charger Aquatics USA Swim Club — the Academy has issued hundreds of certifications over the past 10 years to students and adults in the greater Albuquerque area for completing course requirements in lifeguarding, CPR, and first-aid.
