Because of our unusual trimester schedule this year, the math department is recommending that students continue to engage with the math curriculum in their off trimesters. A small amount of practice on appropriate topics will help maintain concept familiarity and skill fluency. Taking science courses will also keep your math muscles honed, helping maintain their skills in the interim.
The Khan Academy website is the most widely used and well-known platform for this kind of practice. We have curated two lists of Khan Academy courses and/or units for each Academy course. The first list contains concepts to review in preparation for each Academy course. The second list contains units to help maintain skills after taking an Academy course.
In each Khan Academy course, there are multiple units. Once you’re in a “unit” there are videos and articles about the topics. We want you to do math, however, so click on the “Practice” on the right. These are quick mini-quizzes. You can take them multiple times if you want. If you are confused about a question, they’ll offer you videos that reteach the concept. If the problems suggested by Khan Academy are too easy, you are encouraged to select problems that more challenging.
Create your account at https://www.khanacademy.org. The accounts do not need to be connected to an Academy class in order to do this work. If you need assistance navigating the Khan Academy website, contact Dr. Jill Brown at email@example.com or (505) 858-8831.
While participation is not required, we strongly recommend this for students who wish to maintain their skills. The goal is to keep your hand in some math until your next course. You’re not trying to learn new material; you don’t even have to work through things in a systematic manner. You’re just trying to keep your brain working in a mathematical way. Our suggestion is 10 minutes a day, three to five days a week.
