The Yearlong Theme

Begun in 2000, the yearlong theme takes a broad and far-reaching global issue—The American Civil Rights Movement, Human Migration, Localism—and forms the basis for a series of school-wide events and projects. From lectures and workshops to art projects and community events, students explore the theme in great detail, from many different points of view. Teachers incorporate the theme into classroom activities so that students engage with complex ideas and world-changing events throughout the year.

To enhance the yearlong theme, national and international speakers and performers come to campus to work with students during the school day and present to the community in the evening, through our Community Academy lecture series.

2016-17: Albuquerque in the World

Our yearlong theme for the 2016-2017 year will be Albuquerque in the World.

With this theme, we hope to explore the many communities that comprise Albuquerque.  Through studies of culture, music, art, dance, politics, land, business, and science, we hope to sponsor events that will surprise you with the beauty and diversity of our peoples and environment and that will challenge you to think deeply about solutions for our problems. We will also look at issues of income inequality, racism, urban sprawl, environmental degradation, and development.

Our focus will also include an exploration of best imagined futures for our community. How can we create sustainable business, manufacturing, and technology companies that will keep young people here and draw others to Albuquerque? While focused specifically on the experience of Albuquerque, we will look to other cultures and communities that can offer us ideas and new ways to think about old and new problems.
