The choral program at Albuquerque Academy comprises seven ensembles, offering performance opportunities and vocal instruction to Academy students at all levels who wish to pursue a love of singing.
The three curricular groups — Choristers, Mastersingers, and Upper School Chorus — offer instruction in vocal technique, music theory and history as well as essential choral techniques. Additionally, a Voice elective is available to students in grades 10-12 who wish to pursue the advanced study of solo vocal repertoire and technique.
Four auditioned extra-curricular groups provide students with the opportunity to perform music of varying styles and historical periods. Chamber Singers (grades 6-7) is a co-ed group performing varied repertoire; Academy Bel Canto (classical and beyond), Cool Breeze (female vocal jazz) and Unaccompanied Minors (modern a cappella) are options for students in grades 8-12.
All of Albuquerque Academy's choral groups perform in at least three concerts a year, both on their own and occasionally as a larger, collaborative ensemble. In addition to performances on campus, Academy choral ensembles perform around the city in venues including ABQ BioPark, The Cathedral Church of St. John, and, recently, even as far afield as Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Academy's choral ensembles are well-represented each year at All-State festivals, and enjoy opportunities to collaborate with nationally and internationally renowned composers and choir directors.
