String Orchestra

The Academy's string orchestra (which includes violin, viola, cello, and bass) provides students with varied, top level classroom and performance experiences. Students have the opportunity to start the study of a stringed instrument in middle school. The repertoire becomes more advanced as students move through the grade levels to the top grade string orchestra, the Albuquerque Academy Chamber Players. The repertoire throughout the orchestra curriculum encompasses a broad range of music from composers of many eras who have written specifically for this arrangement of instruments. In addition to the  string orchestras, students may also take part in extracurricular groups including Celtic Band and Mariachi Band.

String students at the Academy are well represented in the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program, as well as the New Mexico All-State Orchestras each year. Many students have won concerto competitions and performed with the Youth Symphony, as well as the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, both in Albuquerque and on tour. Academy students have also won the Santa Fe Pro Musica Youth Scholarship competition. String players have gone on to study music performance and education at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Northwestern University, and Oberlin Conservatory, among others.
