The Grounds Department provides a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment by maintaining all landscape, hardscape, and parking lots. Maintaining healthy trees, turf, and gardens through the use of effective, cost-efficient methods is the primary goal.
The Grounds Department maintains more than 50 acres of athletic and campus turf, trees, and bushes. The campus features 12 athletic venues and dozens of green and colorful gardens, incorporating many native plant species using xeriscape methods and design. We also maintain an irrigation system that inlcudes more than 350 valves and thousands of sprinkler heads and drip methods. Our electronic irrigation system is programmed to manage our irrigation needs using reclaimed water that is diverted to the Rio Grande. The water is pumped up to higher elevation city storage tanks during the day and then gravity fed to users like us below the tanks to use when the sun’s evaporative powers will be least effective. The Grounds crew is also responsible for the collection and proper disposal or recycling of trash. Albuquerque Academy operates a recycling program, led by Mark Mellott, that accepts various paper, aluminum, plastic, cardboard, scrap metal, and electronic components.
