New Charger Guide

New Charger Guide

If you are unable to find the information you are looking for, contact Jessica Jones (828-3300).

School Supplies

This school supply list will be published by August 1, in time for the New Mexico sales tax-free weekend that begins on Friday, August 5.

PE Uniforms

If you are a returning 7th grader, please plan to use your PE uniform from last year this year. (If you have lost or outgrown your uniform, you will have an opportunity to purchase another one from your PE teacher when classes begin.) If you are an incoming 6th grader or a new 7th grader, please note that we wear uniforms to PE class, and your PE teachers will take care of this detail when the year starts, along with the assignment of your PE locker.

Family and Pod Nofications

We will be publishing our class lists on Monday morning, August 8, at which point we will notify students about pod and family placements. As part of a longstanding tradition, however, every student will also be receiving a phone call from their family head at some point during that same week. In addition to simply making personal introductions, it will be a time for clarification before the start of school, and we are already looking forward to having those first important conversations with our students.

6th Grade Bridge Program: August 8-12, 2022

Our Bridge to Success program for rising 6th graders is back for its second year, and we are really looking forward to hosting a fresh batch of Chargers. It will be held August 8-12, and there are still spaces available. If you have not already signed up but would like to attend, please contact Division Head Chris Dineen.

7th Grade Orientation (New 7th Graders Only): August 9, 2022

We are welcoming our largest-ever class of new 7th graders this year, with at least 17 new students already planning to join the Class of 2028. I will be meeting with this group for an orientation from 9-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, August 9. We will get up to speed on what you’ll need for a successful start to the year, meet with some of the 8th grade student council reps, take a short, off-the-beaten-path tour, and answer any questions you might have about the Academy. Please save the date, new 7th graders!

Ice Cream Social: August 14, 2022

Save the Date: The 6th Grade Ice Cream Social will take place from 12-2 p.m. on Sunday, August 14. All new sixth graders will have an opportunity to meet their family heads at this event, and we’ll help get you ready for the first day of school the following Thursday. Division Head Chris Dineen will send an invite out later this summer with more details.

Convocation: August 18, 2022

We plan to repeat our lovely outdoor convocation ceremony on the first day of school, and more information about this will follow. Sixth graders: If you have a sibling, cousin, friend, or neighbor in the senior class you would like to pair up with for your convocation walk up the path, please reach out to 6-7 Division Assistant Karla Vecchia (vecchia@aa.edu) to make those arrangements.

Grade 6 Math Placement

To assist in identifying the sixth-grade math course that is best suited to each student, the mathematics department will administer optional math placement tests. We will use the results of this test as well as your child’s admission math exam score to make thoughtful placement decisions. If you think your child may be ready to take Pre-Algebra in sixth grade, we strongly recommend this test. We will contact all families with information about math placement determinations no later than Friday, July 15.

Because the test is designed to help us determine where admitted students will fit within our sixth-grade curricula, no extra test preparation is required or recommended. Students simply need to bring a pencil; calculators are not needed, nor will they be allowed. Please plan on arriving about 30 minutes early to sign in your child before the start of the test. Please also have your child bring a book to read in case they finish early. We will dismiss all students at 10 a.m.

Please contact 6-7 Division Assistant Jessica Jones at (505) 828-3300 with any questions.

Learn more about our math department here.

Albuquerque Academy offers two different math courses for sixth graders — Math 6 and Pre-Algebra. The Math 6 curriculum is rigorous in its own right and is designed to prepare students to take Pre-Algebra in seventh grade, while the higher-level Pre-Algebra class is designed to prepare students to take Algebra in seventh grade. Both classes offer very challenging math instruction well above typical sixth-grade standards, and each serve as an excellent foundation for math in our upper school program. Students who do not take the placement exam will be enrolled in the Math 6 course.

Heritage Spanish

Details about the Heritage Spanish program will be provided by email. Learn more about our world languages department.

Performing Arts Choices

Students in grades 6 and 7 have the opportunity to choose from a variety of performing arts classes.  Learn more about our performing arts department.

On April 25, we sent an email to incoming sixth-grade parents and parents of new seventh graders with details about performing arts options. The performing arts selection form is due May 2. Please contact Performing Arts Department Chair Richard Hogle if you have any questions. Mr. Hogle will also be available at the new student welcome event on May 1.
