The Class of 2022’s Quinn Ennis has been named one of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars by the Department of Education. The 161 high school seniors are selected based on their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.
Quinn will attend Yale University where he will major in physics. During his time at the Academy, he has been involved in Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, the chess team, community service, and the student newspaper. He is also a 2022 Bryan Cameron Impact Scholar and in August 2021 started EFFECTS, a non-profit that aims to bring inquiry-based science education to underserved elementary school students in Albuquerque. EFFECTS currently serves more than 100 students at three schools.
“Quinn being named a U.S. Presidential Scholar is not entirely surprising,” says Head of School Julianne Puente. “He possesses an innate intellectual curiosity and sees the value in learning as much as he can about everything. He is also highly disciplined and self-driven. He is the real deal!”
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.
Of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,000 candidates qualified for the 2022 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or through nominations made by chief state school officers, other partner recognition organizations and YoungArts, the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists.
Math department faculty member David Metzler was also named a Distinguished Teacher by the same program.
