The team also won the district championship earlier this year.

Thomas Mathine won first place in this individual tournament played as an open competition. Individuals scoring 2.5 points or more are invited to a second tournament — the Denker Playoff.
Also at this competition, the top four scores of individuals from the same school are tallied for a team score. Thomas Mathine (3.5 points), Evan Liu (2.5 points), Ryu Hsu (1.5 points), and Ethan Ross ’18 (0 points) took first place.

Thomas Mathine participated and won the tournament, and is now the New Mexico K-12 Scholastic Chess State Champion. He will be the New Mexico representative at the 2013 Denker Tournament of High School Champions in July. The Denker is a tournament in which one player from each state and Washington, D.C. compete for the title of national champion and a full four-year scholarship to the University of Texas/Dallas. This is the second year in a row in which an Academy student will be the New Mexico representative (Eddie Lu ’12 was last year’s state champion).

Willow LeTard ’19 earned third place in the tournament. She is a member of Academy’s middle school chess team who took first place in the city competition earlier this year.
