Academy Community Members Recognized for Philanthropy

Albuquerque Academy was well-represented at the 2013 National Philanthropy Day luncheon recently held in Albuquerque. Sponsored by the New Mexico Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the annual luncheon recognizes community members for their philanthropic service. Former Trustee and parent Doug Brown was the keynote speaker and former parent Tom Joles served as master of ceremony.

Academy student Andrew Wilson ’16 was named Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy (High School Student) for 2013. Andrew was recognized for his dedication and support as a volunteer and fundraiser for March of Dimes.

Nancy Croker, MD, and Joseph Gorvetzian, MD and their children Andy ’11, Sarah ’13, and Joey ’09 were named the Outstanding Family in Philanthropy for 2013. The Croker-Gorvetzian family generously funds the Academy’s Community Builders program, a tuition-free program that gives students from Albuquerque Academy and other area schools an opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of community philanthropy and nonprofit organizations. A gift from Joseph’s parents, Joseph and Eve Gorvetzian, established the Gorvetzian Global Language Initiative, broadening the language choices available to Academy students, with a focus on non-European languages.

Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Texas, Katie Ogawa ’10 was named San Antonio’s Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy. Katie was recognized for her work with Homelessness Outreach Pursuing Education (HOPE) Hall at Trinity University and for her work as an ambassador for Trinity.
