On Monday, March 10, 2014, Governor Susana Martinez signed Senate Bill 158 (SB 158), sponsored by Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto of Albuquerque and lobbied by Adam Foster ’18, a current eighth-grade student.
Working closely with Senator Ivey-Soto, Adam testified before the Senate Consumer and Public Affairs, Senate Education, and House Education committees to help get this bill passed.
SB 158 allows high school juniors and seniors from private and home schools to receive free tuition for college courses taken at any New Mexico school of higher education. Before the passage of this bill, only students from public schools were able to ask that their school districts pay the cost of tuition. Adam’s motivation to work on this bill was his conviction that all New Mexico students — regardless of whether they attend public or private school — be treated equally.
