The Albuquerque Academy Speech and Debate team captured first placed with a lead of 132 points!
Forty-nine members of the Albuquerque Academy Speech and Debate team participated in the three-day State tournament in March, demonstrating group effort in critiquing one other, offering new ideas, and researching topics. The team won first place with a lead of 132 points!
Receiving first place finishes were:
Zoe Goldblum ’14 — Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking
Jessica Berry ’15 and Zoe Goldblum — Varsity Policy Debate
EmmaLia Mariner ’15 and Raisa Shah ’15 — Public Forum Debate
Julia Lu ’14 and Michael Chavez ’14 — Duo Interpretation
Michael Chavez — Humorous Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation
An exceptional showing by ten Novice Policy debaters — Megan Cadigan ’14, Eushrah Hossain ’14, Blythe Johnston ’15, Jenna Lin ’16, Alysia Lozoya ’14, Tarisiro Muneri ’18, Emma O’Connell ’15, Kathleen Torrez ’15, Omar Villescas ’15, and Emma Wellman ’16 — brought home the first five places for this paired event.
Additional strong performances placed the following students in the top three finishes:

Omar Villescas ’15 — Expository Speaking, 2nd
Elena Purcell ’15 — Oral Interpretation, 3rd
Sally Midani ’14 and Jaimie Lin ’14 — Duo Interpretation, 2nd
Geordan Majewski ’14 — Original Oratory, 3rd
The team’s state championship win is dedicated to Angela Mathew ’11, who recently passed away in a tragic car accident.
