Academy seventh grader Shannon Porter recently passed her “Senior Moves/Gold” test in figure skating — the highest achievement in freeskating and moves — earning her the designation of U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist. Shannon is the youngest person from Albuquerque (age 12) to have ever passed this test.
Becoming a U.S. Figure Skating gold medalist is the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication to the sport. In a typical year, athletes complete approximately 40,000 U.S. Figure Skating test levels; of those, about 1,300 (3 percent) are at the gold or senior level.
Shannon skates for the Broadmoor Skating Club, and trains at the Outpost Ice Arena in addition to the World Arena in Colorado Springs.
Congratulations Shannon!
