Two Academy Science Bowl Teams to Represent New Mexico at National Finals in April

In making the announcement, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said, “The National Science Bowl® has grown into one of the most prestigious science academic competitions in the country and challenges students to excel in fields vital to America’s future. I congratulate these students for advancing to the National Finals, where they will be among some of the brightest science and math students from across the country.”

One of the nation’s largest science competitions, Science Bowl challenges students in a fast-paced, question-and-answer format in disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth, space, physics, and math. The top 16 high school teams and the top eight middle school teams at the National Finals will receive $1,000 for their school’s science departments.

Middle School
From a field of 29 teams (three of which were Academy teams), the middle school team of eighth graders comprising Charles Fan, Elias Garcia, Bailey McCarthy, Eric Swiler, and Akshay Warrier won the regional competition on March 21, 2015.

The other two middle school teams participating in the regional competition were:

• Andrew Potts, Jonah Romero, Danny Ross, Wyatt Ziehe, and Andras Zolyomi (all sixth graders)
• Stephen Chu ’21, Nikita Jaiswal ’19, Mihir Patel ’21, Ramses Tanedo ’21, and Christian Viets ’20
• Caleb Dang ’21 was the alternate.

High School
Academy’s team comprising seniors Andy Chen, Raine Min, Andrew Nelson, and Ben Zolyomi, won the high school regional competition earlier this year in February.
