The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation announced earlier this week that 26 of the Albuquerque Academy juniors who competed in the National Merit Scholarship Program last spring have been named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) which serves as an initial screen of program participants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
This spring these students will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million.
“The efforts of these students, along with their teachers and families, rank the Academy fourth highest among independent schools in the nation for the number of these honored students,” said Albuquerque Academy’s Head of School Andrew Watson. “On behalf of the Academy, Albuquerque, and New Mexico, we congratulate these students, applaud their efforts to be their best in representing their families, school, and Albuquerque, and wish them well as they move to the next level of the National Merit Scholarship competition.”
