The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation announced earlier this week that 25 of the Albuquerque Academy seniors who competed in the National Merit Scholarship Program last spring have been named Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen of program participants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
This spring these students will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.
“It is great news again for our curious and hard-working students, their talented teachers, the Academy community, and Albuquerque,” said Albuquerque Academy’s Head of School Andrew Watson. “We congratulate all the Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, especially the 25 students from Academy’s Class of 2019. Their efforts and success placed the Academy among the country’s top ten independent schools in number of Semifinalists again this year. These 25 seniors are part of 271 Academy Semifinalists over the past decade, a pattern of success stretching far into our past, and, we hope, far into our future.”
