Akilan Sankaran ’25 finished in first place at the New Mexico State Mouthcounts competition and will represent the Academy and the state at the national competition in May. This competition, says Mathcounts club adviser Jason Zuffranieri, is the pinnacle of middle-school mathematics.
“Akilan has been coming to the club since he was a sixth grader and has never stopped striving to get better,” says Mr. Z. “Between our club meetings, Dr. Metzler’s Math Club meetings, and Akilan’s own time spent practicing and learning, he has sharpened himself up from a speedy solver with an occasional inattention to important details (in past years) to a careful master of the many solving tools he has come across.”
Eighth grader Jack Yu placed fifth — the highest finish ever for a Charger (apart from Akilan’s victory) under Mr. Z’s guidance.
