The Class of 2021’s Melinda Modisette has been named one of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars by the Department of Education. The 161 high school seniors are selected based on their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.
Melinda will attend Harvard University where she will major in engineering and visual arts. During her time at the Academy, she has been recognized for her artwork, involved in community service, and a member of the wrestling team. Among her many achievements, Melinda is a 2021 Coca-Cola Scholar, a 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Award winner, the 2021 NM District 1 Congressional Art Award winner, and 2020 Semper Fidelis All-American of the Year.
Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored more than 7,600 of the nation’s top-performing students. The program was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.
Community and Global Citizenship Director Dara Johnson was also named a Distinguished Teacher by the same program.
