Athletics Hall of Famers Also Recognized
Albuquerque Academy honored six alumni and one former faculty member at the 2022 Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday, September 23, during Homecoming Weekend. Administrators, friends, family, and faculty gathered in the Music Building’s Performance Hall to induct the second class of the Albuquerque Academy Athletics Hall of Fame and to present two alumni awards.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Class of 2000, received the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award. Kate is the second elected female mayor in Phoenix history and one of the youngest big-city mayors in the U.S. In November 2020, she returned to office with the highest number of votes ever cast for a mayoral candidate in Phoenix. Following her time at Albuquerque Academy, where she participated in a variety of activities including student senate, science bowl, and the environmental club, Kate attended Harvard University and received her M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dustin Martin, Class of 2007, received the Young Alumni Award. Dustin is a member of the Navajo Nation and the executive director of Wings of America, a Santa Fe-based nonprofit dedicated to building healthy Native communities through youth running initiatives. Originally from Gallup, Dustin was a Division I NCAA runner in college who graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University. In 2018 he participated in Sacred Strides for Healing, a nearly 800-mile run completed by members of several Four Corners tribes to raise awareness about Bears Ears National Monument. During his time at the Academy, he was a member of the cross country and track and field teams.
Ellen Hart ’76, a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2021, inducted the members of the 2022 Albuquerque Academy Athletics Hall of Fame:
Anika Apostalon, Class of 2013, swimming
During her time at Albuquerque Academy, Anika Apostalon was a four-time state champion before swimming for San Diego State University and the University of Southern California, where she won an NCAA title. A Czech-American, Anika has swum for the Czech Republic national team and holds the Czech national record in four events.
Dave Barney, swim coach
The legendary Dave Barney coached Academy swimmers for 46 years, seeing his teams win 41 New Mexico state titles, 260 individual and relay state titles, and 400 All-American awards. He has given national and international lectures on the history of sport and created the statistical model for converting swim times at altitude.
Curtis Beach, Class of 2009, track and field
Curtis Beach led Chargers Track & Field to three state championship titles, while winning 17 individual state titles of his own during the course of his high school career. At Duke University, where he won two NCAA Championship titles in the indoor heptathlon, he was a seven-time All-American in four different events.
Andrea Goldberg, Class of 1998, tennis
Andrea Goldberg still holds the record for winning five straight New Mexico singles tennis championships. At Yale, she played #1 in singles and doubles and was the recipient of the Henry Fellowship, which provided one year of tuition at the University of Oxford in England where she continued to to participate in intercollegiate tennis while completing a master’s degree in economic and social history.
Chainey Umphrey, Class of 1988, gymnastics
Chainey Umphrey trained at Gold Cup Gymnastics before competing in gymnastics at UCLA, where he was an All-American and two-time team captain. He was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1989 to 1997 and of the 1996 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team.
