Journalists from around the world are in Pakistan waiting for the next steps in the peace talks. One of them, with deep New Mexico roots and a familiar name, didn’t have to travel far to cover this part of the history.
New Mexicans knew Tom Joles as a trusted KOB 4 journalist for decades.
“It was a career well spent in a place with people I will never forget,” Tom Joles said.
But Betsy Joles ’13 knew him as dad and said she also spent time at KOB 4 as a child.
“I worked in the back room, sort of digitizing old stories. It was very, very boring,” Betsy said. “We spent a lot of time in childhood there as well, having dinners with my dad, having birthday parties, you know, in the little conference room.”
Betsy later moved beyond KOB 4 and followed in her dad’s footsteps. She moved to Turkey to cover the Syrian refugee crisis.
