Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has just announced the national medalists for 2018, with nine Academy students receiving recognition.
Earlier this year, 21 Academy students received gold medals in the 2018 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing competition. Those award-winning entries moved on to review in the national competition, along with thousands of entries from throughout the United Stated and beyond.

Toby Utterback ’19 – Gold Medal for her painting, Deadly Deer
Cameron Gutierrez ‘19 – Gold Medal for his photo, Plane Crash
Magdalena Ramos Mullane ’18 – Silver Medal for her photo series, Ritual
Writing
Anabelle Helsell ’18 – Gold Medal for her poem Girl-Blood and a Silver Medal for her poem Glittering and Still
Isabel Gallegos ’18 – Silver Medal for her Writing Portfolio
Elizabeth JohnsonBrown ’20 – Silver Medal for her essay, Going Back
Maya Land ’20 – Silver Medal for her essay, No Hablo Español
Rosa Bieber-Stanley ’21 – Silver Medal for her short story, The Sunflower
Entries were blindly adjudicated first regionally and then nationally by panels of judges comprising renowned artists, authors, educators, and arts professionals. Works were judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal vision or voice. Gold medal winners are invited to the awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall.
This is the most prestigious art and writing competition in the country for high school students. Past distinguished award recipients include Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike, Stephen King, and Zac Posen.
