Mock Trial Team Captures Second Consecutive National Title

The Academy Varsity Mock Trial team participated in the 2013 National Finals in Indianapolis, IN on May 10-13, 2013, representing New Mexico and competing against 39 other states and territories. Team members Maya Durvasula ’14, Roushon Talcott ’13, John White ’13, Mara Short ’14, Clint Ewell ’14, Sameera Kassam ’13, and Eli Bernstein ’13 came away victorious, finishing as the only 5-0 team and successfully defending their 2012 national championship.

Albuquerque Academy is only the third team/state in the history of the competition to win back-to-back championships. Head of School, Andrew Watson made a surprise appearance on the second day of the tournament. He commented, “Our team’s performance, all set up by so much preparation and teamwork over the course of the year, displayed the power of deep reading and analysis of the case, a listening ability that allowed us to shift our arguments to make decisive points, a grace and steadfastness in the face of antagonistic and diverting questions from opposing counsel, and an incredible maturity when presenting our argument. I think this was a moment that everyone in the courtroom will remember for the rest of their lives.”

Kudos to Academy’s Mock Trial coach, Joaquin Sanchez ’95. His approach to coaching gives students skills in the rules of evidence and trial procedure that allow them to dominate the courtroom. And, with witnesses who feel so real, the courtroom style is riveting. Also coaching this year’s team is Matt Scarvie, a summa cum laudegraduate of Barrett Honors, Arizona State University. Matt was a mock trial star in NM while in high school and college.
