Recent Albuquerque Academy graduate AnaMaria Perez is part of a team of students who took second place in the 2020 Making for Good Challenge. Their proposal, one of 375 from across the U.S., outlined plans for a portable CT scanner that could be used by first responders. AnaMaria’s multi-state team met through the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
The annual Making for Good Challenge builds upon a Stanley Black & Decker and Discovery Education educational program – Innovation Generation – that empowers students to become makers through no-cost, dynamic digital resources. Through real-world explorations of STEAM, Innovation Generation cultivates students’ collaboration, problem solving, and creative thinking.
“There are a vast number of applications,” says AnaMaria, “that math has that could be super useful in order to really make an influence on the world.” A member of the Academy’s science bowl and diving teams and winner of the 2020 Doc Harrington Award, AnaMaria will attend Harvard University in the fall.
