Two hundred-seventy students, organized into 70 teams, competed in this year-long contest. Participants select a problem from math or science and solve it using one of the computer science languages. The Academy team wrote a program in Java to compare some algorithms for tracking the spread of contagious diseases.
As part of the contest, students attend modeling and other classes at New Mexico Tech, give a preliminary presentation at the University of New Mexico before a panel of judges, and submit a series of reports. Feedback is provided by judges along the way.
The conclusion, held on Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22 at LANL, consisted of a final presentation by each team before a panel of 12 judges, a tour of LANL computer facilities, and a visit to the Bradbury Science Museum.
