On Saturday, February 15, Albuquerque Academy hosted the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition. Fielding two complete teams of four, and a partial team of two, Academy students brought home a third place overall and advanced to the state competition on March 8. This is a notable accomplishment, even more so because two sixth graders were added to the official team only two weeks ago — taking the place of two seventh graders who were in Washington, DC to present their winning Future City project.
Participants and those advancing to state (indicated with an *) are:
Calvin Abdallah ’18
Carter Abdallah ’18*
Zach Auster ’20*
Sophie Carroll ’19*
Tyler Kann ’18
Henry Luo ’18*
AnaMaria Perez ’20*
Nisali Piyasena ’19
Gabriel Sandoval ’19*
Kevin Xue ’19
Appreciation goes to math faculty member Ilana Vogenthaler who works with the eighth grade students during Friday lunch, and to “mathletes” Dylan Hendrickson ’16 and Max Johnson ’16 who come to every after school practice.
