Student members of the Sixth Grade Environmental Club volunteered their time on Friday, February 7 restoring a piece of the Bosque. After learning how the river ecosystem has been changed by human activities (such as flood control), and an introduction to invasive species, enthusiastic students dug holes down to the water table and planted over 20 cottonwood and willow “poles.” It is the hope that these native trees will have a chance to re-establish a healthy shade producing population. Students worked under the supervision of Bill Pentler, who works for the City of Albuquerque’s Open Space, and Karen Temple-Beamish, Academy science faculty and sustainability coordinator.
