ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL — The U.S. Marine Corps, in recognizing exemplary student athletes across the country through its Semper Fidelis All-American Program, has named Melinda Modisette from Albuquerque Academy among those selected to this year’s class.
The program – in its fourth year – spotlights approximately 100 student athletes based on athletic prowess, academic success, and embodiment of the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment, according to a news release.
Modisette was selected by Intersport, a marketing company partnering with the Marines, as the 2020 Female All-American of the year, and will receive a $5,000 scholarship for her college education.
She is credited with being one of the top leaders in the New Mexico women’s wrestling movement, overcoming many obstacles to become a top wrestler and state champion, officials said in the release.
Modisette also has made an impact in her community through participation in the Cross-Cultural Art Exchange, Project Heart Start and volunteering with the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation.
In the face of COVID-19, the Marine Corps chose to cancel the in-person 2020 Battles Won Academy, a multi-day experience in Washington, D.C., typically held in July. Instead, Modisette was recognized during the Battles Won Academy Live virtual event Dec. 6.
