The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation announced last week that 25 of the Albuquerque Academy juniors who competed in the National Merit Scholarship Program last spring have been named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
This spring these students will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million.
“We celebrate these students, and their teachers, for again posting such impressive results, said Albuquerque Academy’s Head of School Andrew Watson. “This is the tenth straight year in which Academy students have ranked among the top ten independent schools in the nation in National Merit Semifinalists, again showing that New Mexican students can indeed compete on a national- and world-class level.”
Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) which served as an initial screen of program participants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
