Albuquerque Academy Science faculty member Karen Temple-Beamish was invited by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to present her climate steward project “Children Capturing Carbon” at the National Science Teachers Association Conference in Los Angeles in March.
The presentation highlights how science and technology can be used to teach climate change in the Academy’s Desert Oasis Teaching Garden.
“One of the lessons that I shared at the conference is called, ‘Rain Water Harvesting in the Desert,’” explains Karen. “One of our technology educators, Gayle Wilson, helped me develop this lesson where students use ArcGIS to measure the area of the science building roof to estimate water run-off potential from roof surfaces to harvest the rain.”
Karen says the best part of the conference was sharing the Desert Oasis Teaching Garden curriculum with teachers across the nation. “They are so eager to integrate climate change science and solutions into their own science teaching,” she says.
