Josh Skarsgard ’96

Josh is a proud Academy graduate and former state basketball champion (1994). He played collegiately at UC Santa Barbara (1996-97) and is the founder and owner of the Albuquerque Basketball Club. Josh served as the 6-7 girls basketball coach in 2023-24 and won the 2023 APIAL championship. He is the parent of three Chargers — Andrew ’26, Lily ’28, and Joy ’30 — and has three brothers who also graduated from the Academy — Adam ’92, Monte ’94, and Jason ’96.

Cross Country – Boys & Girls

Adam Kedge

Adam has coached at Albuquerque Academy for more than two decades. During his tenure, he has served as both an assistant and a head coach in three different sports. His current roles are the boys and girls head coach of cross country and the head boys track and field coach. At the Academy, Coach Kedge’s teams have been recognized for success at both the state and national levels. Coach Kedge is a 2016 inductee of the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

Football

David Lee

David has been coaching football since 2001. He began coaching in the Young American Football League (YAFL) in New Mexico and then coached competitive high school football for 10 years. He was the defensive coordinator at Hope Christian High School for six years, where he led his team to a state title. His aggressive defensive formations were a testament to Hope’s success. Before becoming the head football coach for Albuquerque Academy, David served as the defensive coordinator for the Chargers for three seasons.

Golf – Boys & Girls

Kevan Schott

In Kevan’s first season at the Academy in 2022-23, he led both golf teams to district championships and the girls team to the state championship. Prior to joining the Academy, he was the head golf coach at UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas, a Division II university, from 2017-21. Kevan grew up in Albuquerque and attended La Cueva High School. He has been a PGA Member since 2013 and is currently the director of instruction at TopGolf Albuquerque, giving private instruction.

Lalania Kolek

As a coach for the Chargers since 2011, Lalania’s 2018 season was her third most successful season at the helm of the program. During that time, Lalania developed the Academy boys soccer program into one of the premier programs in the state of New Mexico. According to a USA Today NSCAA soccer poll, Academy was ranked eighth in the nation at the start of the 2016 season.

Lalania brings extensive experience at the high school and Olympic developmental ranks. She currently holds a United States Soccer Federation “B” national coaching license. She has coached a Scholar All-American, an All-American, and Gatorade Player of the Year.

Lalania is an Albuquerque transplant who graduated from and played soccer for Cibola High School. She proudly served in the United States Navy, where she was an All Navy Team selectee. Lalania has spent time in the WPSL and W league playing for teams such as the UCSD Comets, Albuquerque Crush, and the Albuquerque Asylum.

Andrew Wiese ’87

Andrew graduated from the Albuquerque Academy in 1987 where he was a captain, 1st Team All-State player, and State Champion as part of the boys varsity soccer team. He continued his playing career at Dartmouth College where he was an All-Ivy honoree and three-year captain leading his team in 1990 to its best record in program history and a berth in the NCAA Division I National Championship Elite 8. Andrew has coached youth soccer at the club, ODP, and high school levels since 1994 and holds a USSF National B Coaching License.

Swimming & Diving – Boys & Girls

Jim Van Atta

Jim’s coaching career spans parts of four decades at the club, high school, and collegiate levels. He served as a graduate assistant coach at West Point, an assistant coach at Indiana University Swim Camp, and a volunteer assistant coach at West Point. From 2016 to 2020, he coached for Southwest Aquatic Team (SWAT) in El Paso, significantly growing the team and producing TAGS finalists, junior national qualifiers, and college-bound athletes. From 2021 to 2024, he served as the strength and performance coach at Charger Aquatics, also coaching the CAQ Gold group for 10-12-year-olds.

As a swimmer at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Jim was a 12-time Patriot League finalist, 400 IM conference champ, and four-time Eastern Seaboard finalist. He maintained his connection to swimming during his 27-year career as an Army infantry officer, which included three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he coached and led soldiers in combat every day.

Mike Smolskis

From walk-on player to #1 Singles and #1 Doubles college player and captain, Mike graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Mike has been a young leader in tennis coaching and program development since graduating from college, most recently serving as the head pro at Galbraith Tennis Center, a USTA PNW center in Tacoma, WA, where he led and built programs for junior tournament-level players and adults. Mike joined Albuquerque Academy in 2026 as the head coach for the boys varsity team and the assistant director of the Albuquerque Academy Racquet Center.

Tennis – Girls

Amy Badger

Amy is the director of racquet sports and head coach of the girls tennis program. Over nearly three decades, she has led the girls varsity to nine state championships with dozens of individual state singles and doubles champions. Amy played #1 for the UNM Lobos and has been recognized with numerous coaching awards within the professional industry and with high school coaching associations at the national level. In addition, for over two decades each fall, she has led the no-cut Academy middle school tennis program.

Kathy Brion

Kathy took over the Academy girls track and field program in 2019 after serving as girls head track and field coach at Eldorado High School for 31 years, where she also taught physical education/health for 30 years. During that time, she coached numerous individual state champions and won four team titles. In 2014, Kathy was awarded girls track and field Coach of the Year for New Mexico by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Kathy is also part of the coaching staff for the middle school cross-country program at the Academy.

Ted Alley

Ted is a native of Albuquerque and graduated from Valley High School, where he was a varsity wrestler. Ted also wrestled collegially at the University of New Mexico. Prior to becoming the head coach at Albuquerque Academy, Ted founded the 505 Wrestling Club and had been head coach at St. Pius X and for the Academy middle school wrestling team. Professionally, Ted is a 777 captain for FedEx. Previously, he was a Harrier pilot in the USMC and an F-16 pilot in the National Guard.
