Twenty students from the Academy competed at the HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC) in 14 different events. This year’s SLC was the largest New Mexico has ever hosted, with close to 500 students taking part. Top finishers included:
- 1st Place, Creative Problem Solving – A team of Emma Eden ’24, Becca Faber ’24, Lucy Lott ’24, and Viveka Narayanan ’24
- 1st Place, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – A team of Samuel Goodrow ’25 and TJ Miller ’25
- 1st Place, Cultural Diversities and Disparities in Medicine – Laurel Nash-Jarecki ’23
- 1st Place, Life-Threatening Situations (Middle School) – Chiara Padilla ’27
- 1st Place, Medical Math – Leela Young ’24
- 2nd Place, Cultural Diversities and Disparities in Medicine – Maya Macias ’25
- 2nd Place, Dental Science – Ella Henderson ’25
- 3rd Place, Epidemiology – Sophia Wrobel ’24
- 3td Place, Medical Reading – Elizabeth Hiller ’25
- Top-Five Finisher, Prepared Speaking – Ava Stein ’25
The HOSA SLC competition was held in conjunction with UNM’s Office of Pre-Health Professions’ Health Professions Symposium. Many students attended workshops to learn about applications and interviews, medical school, and medical professions are available, and in some cases they got to try specific skills, like suturing.
HOSA is an organization for students interested in medical science. During the year, they learn about various medical topics and skills, sometimes guided by club advisers but often learning on their own. The Academy began offering HOSA in 2021-22 with five members. This year, 20 to 30 students regularly attended club meetings.
